Aristotle And Flourishing

Aristotle says that the virtues are necessary for humans to attain happiness, but he means this in terms of something we might call “flourishing” or “living well”, which he considers quite different than simply feeling good.  Thus, according to Aristotle some people might feel that they are happy, but because they lack the virtues they are not truly flourishing.  However, imagine someone that is deceitful, selfish, greedy, self-indulgent, and yet enjoys great pleasure and appears to be quite happy.  Is someone like this “flourishing” or not?  Explain your answer by using at least one quote from this week’s readings and media, and if possible provide examples from real life and/or from literature, film, TV, etc.

Finally, using at least one quote from Hill’s article, briefly discuss whether someone who ignores or harms the environment, or who uses the environment to fulfill their own desires can be said to be flourishing in Aristotle’s sense.

What Is American Ethnic Literature?

While the Harlem Renaissance had created a flowering of African American literature, the decades after World War II saw an explosion of ethnic literature. This literature came from numerous cultures, such as Native American, Asian American, African American, and Hispanic. The authors wrote from their own traditions in response to what they saw as the mainstream of American literature and in response to one another.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper in which you define American ethnic literature. Include the following:

  • Incorporate works from at least three distinct literary traditions so that your explanation is representative of the larger literary movement.
  • Select at least one major author from each of these traditions.
  • Describe how American ethnic literature is important and what factors influenced it. Answer the following questions in your analysis:
    • How is American ethnic literature influential on politics and education?
    • How does American ethnic literature respond to elements that it explicitly discusses, such as political inclusion and exclusion?
    • How does American ethnic literature respond to factors that are not discussed as explicitly, such as technological change?

Format your paper consistent with appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Directions for writing paper: MLA format

Give your paper a title that reflects your theme: “Coming of Age in The Odyssey,” not just “The Odyssey.”

Structure of your paper:

1. You should begin with an introductory paragraph, or thesis. This states what the paper will cover and what point you want to make.

2. The body of the paper should contain examples for the literary work to illustrate your points.

3. A concluding paragraph should sum up what you’ve said and should add some insight beyond your introductory paragraph.

Your paper should have 5 pages of text, not counting the Works Cited list.

Use present tense to describe continuing action in the poem, story or play.

Use “the narrator,” “the poet,” “the speaker,” “the author,” “Homer” correctly. These terms aren’t necessarily interchangeable.

Avoid overly long plot summary. Remember, your reader has read the literary work you’re writing about. Provide enough plot elements to anchor your argument; then give your own opinion or perspective on the incidents/events in the literary work.

In-line text citations:  Athena says to Telemachus, “Find a ship and a crew of 20 men who will follow you” (Book 1, lines 350-351).

When you give a quote, list the speaker of the quote. In Book 7, Odysseus says, “We drew lots to decide who would attack the Cyclops” (line 150).

To cite an outside source in your text, list the author’s name and the book or article. Hugh Kenner writes in Odyssey Revealed that Odysseus is “a complex, heroic character.”

In Works Cited (at the end of your paper) use this format:

Kenner, Hugh, Odyssey Revealed. 1990. New York: Perseus Books.

Homer, The Odyssey, in World Literature, ed. Damrosch, et al. 1980. New York: Pearson.

Don’t just list www.shmoop.com in Works Cited. Give author, title of article & date.  See p. 44 of the Guide to Literary Terms for style. Avoid quoting from 123helpme.com, sparknotes.com, Cliff Notes and other similar web sites. They aren’t academic sources.

The reading in the Norton Anthology of World Literature doesn’t count as an outside source. It is your primary source.

Your Works Cited list should have at least three sources: two primary sources (the assigned works) and one outside source.

Proofread your paper before handing it in. Look for misspellings, noun/verb agreement, run-on sentences, overly long paragraphs and awkward phrasing–and clean them up. Don’t hand in a rough draft. The paper you hand in is your final draft, though you will have the option of re-doing it.

Remember: Quality is more important than quantity!

Respond To My Classmates Response To The Question Posted

3. Why does Frankenstein’s monster kill in the novel? This is a deceptively simple question, so let me elaborate just a bit. What is his reason and motive for revenge? How does the monster admit that all of his killing could have been avoided? What moral burden does this place on us as readers?

A man, or creature as we call him, is created and taught nothing. Similar to the movie I watched, I, Frankenstein has no soul and therefor knows not how to love, care, be good or bad.  It can only learn from what it is taught and it’s surroundings.  Since the creature was abandon by his creator and is turned away by society because of his looks, he begins to know nothing but hate.  He seems to pick up on bad behavior and becomes angry and soon revengeful. In the novel the creature is treated horrible, unwanted and hated and it seems because of this he begins to kill.  What if he was treated with love, respect and most of all accepted even with his looks? His feelings and mannerism would be that much more different and the urge to kill and be so revengeful would almost not exist. Who is to blame? In this novel it would be Victor.  The monsters killings are all do to impose pain on Victor and what he has done to him.
