Quality Improvement Paper

Overview:

You will select an opportunity for improvement from within your healthcare organization. To do so, you must have data that supports performance that is not in line with organizational/national benchmark data (ex. Falls, Patient Satisfaction, Infection rates, ED through-put, lengths of stay, etc). You will discuss your idea with someone from the organization to determine priority projects. You will write a Quality Improvement Paper that will be approximately 20 pages, in APA format (double spaced, 12 point font), excluding title, abstract and reference pages. This project will be guided by the FOCUS-PDSA quality improvement framework. To assist you with this process, each week, we will discuss a component of the model and have corresponding assignments that will help you shape your project.

MANDATORY PROJECT COMPONENTS

The following are requisites for this project:

1. Title Page

2. Abstract

3. Introduction (approx. 1-2 pages), to include:

a.  Thesis or problem statement

b. Background

c. Data that is specific to your unit/organization that serves as the basis for a QI initiative. (May include graphs and charts as appendices, if allowed by the organization)

4. Literature Review (approx. 2-3 pages) (This should be set up as if you were submitting a paper for publication. Do an overview of your findings)

5. Definition of Terms (if applicable and necessary for the reader’s understanding of your work)

6. Body – approx.12-15 pages (not including the title page, abstract and references.)

a. Evidence-based intervention that is being implemented

b. Plan for implementation, including the who, what, when, where and why

c. Ethical considerations

d. Required resources

e. Leadership theory to help guide implementation and sustain it

f. Change theory that will facilitate implementation

g. Evaluation procedures

h. Alternative processes, plan for sustainability

i. How will this improve outcomes? Are there any next steps?

7. Conclusion (approx. 0.5-1 page)

a. Summary (of what you did and found)

b. Discussion (explanation of findings)

8. References – a minimum of ten recent, peer-reviewed sources. Remember, each reference must be cited as an “in-text citation” (within the body of the paper/project).

Instructions

This will be done weekly and according to what we will be studying for that week, and will begin Week 2, and end Week 9.

Each student will be responsible for preparing one power point presentation on pharmacological management of the disease or pharmacological applications of a drug or group of drugs.

1. Each student will clearly write a title for this topic. Examples are ‘Pharmacological Management of Deep Vein Thrombosis and/or Pulmonary Embolisms Using Anticoagulants/Thrombolytics and Nursing Implications’ or ‘Pharmacological Effects of Anti-hypertensive Medications in the Management of Hypertension and Nursing Implications’.
   • Nursing Implications are the nursing related consequences and what you as the nurse should be looking for in the treatment and care of your patient.
2. Students must get their title approved by the professor before the deadline shown in your schedule. Unapproved titles will not be accepted
3. The presentation must identify the Pharmacodynamic properties and actual/potential effects on the patient.

Purpose:

Describe the differing approaches of nursing leaders and managers to issues in practice. To complete this assignment, do the following:

Topic: Nurse turnover

1) Describe the selected issue.

2) Discuss how it impacts quality of care

3) Discuss how it impacts patient safety in the setting in which it occurs.

4) Discuss how professional standards of practice should be demonstrated in this situation to help rectify the issue or maintain professional conduct.

5) Explain the differing roles of nursing leaders and nursing managers in this instance and discuss the different approaches they take to address the selected issue

Create a presentation addressing all of the following topics:

• Categorize several (at least three) types of dementia
• Analyze the pathophysiologic difference between Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia
• Explain the relationship between strep throat and glomerulonephritis
• Describe the pathophysiologic characteristics and management of stress, urge, overflow, and mixed incontinence differ?

This PowerPoint® (Microsoft Office) or Impress® (Open Office) presentation should be a minimum of 20 slides (maximum of 30 slides), including a title, introduction, conclusion and reference slide, with detailed speaker notes and recorded audio comments for all content slides. Use the audio recording feature with the presentation software. Use at least four scholarly sources and make certain to review the module’s rubric before starting your presentation.

Write a 1500-2000 word APA formatted essay of the following topics:

• Differentiate among several types of shock: cardiogenic, hypovolemic, obstructive, distributive, and septic. Explain the pathophysiology of each.
• Discuss the risks of morbidity and mortality and the preparation and prevention measures for one type of natural disaster
• Explain how to set up for disaster closet in the emergency department. What items should it contain? Who should have access?  Should it be locked?  What type of drills should be conducted?

Seasoned nurse educators possess wisdom about teaching (a kind of “with-it-ness”), which they have developed through practical experience over the years. As a person new to nursing education, you have a great deal to learn from a seasoned mentor. In order to gain access to that knowledge, you will conduct an interview with an experienced nurse educator either in a hospital or college setting. Your interview may be conducted face-to-face, online, or by telephone.

For this assignment, you are to:

• Generate a list of questions you will ask during the interview such as
  • teaching strategies, theories, technology, and evaluation techniques.
• Conduct the interview.

Understanding family structure and style is essential to patient and family care. Conducting a family interview and needs assessment gathers information to identify strengths, as well as potential barriers to health. This information ultimately helps develop family-centered strategies for support and guidance.

This family health assessment is a two-part assignment. The information you gather in this initial assignment will be utilized for the second assignment in Topic 3.

Develop an interview questionnaire to be used in a family-focused functional assessment. The questionnaire must include three open-ended, family-focused questions to assess functional health patterns for each of the following:

Select a family, other than your own, and seek permission from the family to conduct an interview. Utilize the interview questions complied in your interview questionnaire to conduct a family-focused functional assessment. Document the responses as you conduct the interview.

Upon completion of the interview, write a 750-1,000-word paper. Analyze your assessment findings. Submit your questionnaire as an appendix with your assignment.

Include the following in your paper:

1. Describe the family structure. Include individuals and any relevant attributes defining the family composition, race/ethnicity, social class, spirituality, and environment.
2. Summarize the overall health behaviors of the family. Describe the current health of the family.
3. Based on your findings, describe at least two of the functional health pattern strengths noted in the findings. Discuss three areas in which health problems or barriers to health were identified.
4. Describe how family systems theory can be applied to solicit changes in family members that, in turn, initiate positive changes to the overall family functions over time.

Cite at least three peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to complete this assignment. Sources should be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
