Discussion Questions:

Leadership in healthcare can be challenging since there are so many stakeholders involved. Stakeholders include patients, employees, physicians, board members, visitors, vendors, community members, etc. Leaders should use evidence-based data to make safe, cost-effective decisions that impact stakeholders. Using research to support your thoughts and opinions, please answer the following questions:

• What are at least three published “best practices” for effective leadership? Do you agree that these practices would encourage favorable outcomes? Why or why not? Do best practices require use of credible data, and if so, what type(s) of data?
• What data might leaders practicing evidence-based management use to improve employees’ morale? Please share an example from your research.

Now, discuss a scenario from personal experience or from research when leadership should have used data from research prior to making a critical decision or change. What data should the leader(s) have used? If data had been used, how might the outcome differ?

Instructions:
Your assignment is to review two resources and then discuss an example provided for you at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials website (Links to an external site.).  As a public health leader, in a constantly changing world, you will need to know how to build relationships within your organization, among organizations, and in the community.  The 12 C’s of Collaboration provides you with a framework that illustrates how coalitions utilize a networking strategy to come together and make change happen, both efficiently and effectively.
For this discussion board exercise, you will select one of the ASTHO examples of successful collaborations and write two brief paragraphs that summarize the collaboration and describe how the 12 C’s Collaborative Actions and Important Collaborative Attitudes were related to the ASTHO example you selected.

1. After you have selected one of the collaboration examples on the ASTHO website (Links to an external site.), then select one category in the 12 C’s Collaborative Actions section and describe how you think that action either was or might have been incorporated into the collaboration example you selected.
2. Now, select one of the 12 C’s Important Collaborative Attitudes.  Similar to step #1, but in a separate paragraph, describe how you think that attitude either was or might have been incorporated into the collaboration example you selected.
3. Finally, tell your classmates your three main takeaways that you have learned from this discussion board activity and how you will apply that in your future career.
4. This discussion board post should be at least 300 words and not more than 600 words.  IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that this writing assignment should be written professionally, with correct grammar and spelling.  You may use the first-person tense, but use this as an opportunity to IMPROVE your writing!

Assignment 3.1: Follow the Leader Part II: Progress Update

This assignment is the second of three assignments that guide you through the planning, implementation and follow-up processes to schedule a meeting with a local public health or healthcare leader that you have identified as a person you would like to meet with during this course.  This leader can be someone you know or would like to meet as you think about your  future career and how he or she might be willing to serve as a mentor to you.  Keep in mind that you are required to complete this, and all other KINE 4354 assignments during this course time period.
In Assignment 2.2 you identified three potential candidates to meet with.  In this assignment, you take that two steps further.  The first step  requires that you confirm your meeting and the second requires that you create a list of talking points and/or questions.  Remember, you chose a leader who works in an organization in which you can see yourself working someday.  Keep in mind the potential this interview assignment has to help build your professional network!
As I have previously mentioned, this series of assignments will provide you with a valuable networking and communication experience.    Through completion of the three assignments, you will be actively involved in planning, implementation , interpersonal interaction at a highly professional level, and follow-up.  A template is included for you to complete (see below) that will guide you through this progress update assignment.  Be sure to review the grading rubric so that you are aware of how you will be graded.

As you explore the various cultures within the military, you may wonder how some of the differences affect the overall culture of the military. How do these differences influence the identity, roles, stressors, and needs of military personnel? The military has evolved over many years to include a rich ethnically and culturally diverse population. This diversity has led the military to break down stereotypes and create a new “norm” for working as a team despite individual differences.
In this Assignment, you analyze how distinct cultures can contribute to the larger military culture.
The Assignment:
In addition to the resources given this week, find in the Walden Library at least one additional piece of peer-reviewed research that helps to identify two distinct populations within military culture. However, do not choose the same culture that you chose for the Discussion.
In a 3- to 4-page paper:

• Describe some characteristics of the population.
• Describe how you would approach those cultures as a military social worker.
• Identify strengths and challenges associated with this culture within the military.
• Describe specific social work skills you would need to help clients within these populations.
• Explain the importance of knowing how this population fits within the military culture.

This assignment is the first part of a three-part advocacy action planning assignment you will complete across the duration of this course.  This series of assignments is a major part of your grade.  In this first part, you will identify a public health issue and organization that you care about (PASSION) and an idea you have that would improve that issue, or further the organization’s mission, vision and values (PURPOSE).
Your advocacy action plan will consist of five steps.  Assignment 3.2 requires that you complete the first step in action planning which is to identify the problem or need.  In order to do this, you will need to answer the following questions:

• What issue are you planning to advocate for?
• What organization do you plan to select to propose this action plan to?
• Why is there a need for change?  What is wrong with the present service or process?
• What are the existing strengths and weaknesses?  (You can apply the knowledge you gained in your SWOT analysis assignment here!)
• What are the potential gains, losses or risks of change?
• Who will be affected?
• How much will your proposed change cost?
• What is likely to happen if no action is taken?

A template is provided for you that takes you through each of the questions above in a step-by-step manner.  It is critical that you review the University of Kansas Community Tool Box reading on action planning (Links to an external site.) prior to starting on this assignment.  If you have not reviewed that material, take a pause here and read.  Then, you will be better prepared to complete the template below!   In addition, I have provided you with previous presentations created by some of my emerging leaders in the Global Sports Mentoring Program.  NOTE:  These presentations are visual only as they were presented in an in-person setting.  But, they should give you an idea of what a completed advocacy action plan looks like:

Assignment: Diagnosis: The Burden of Stigma in Help Seeking
The threat of public stigma, as well as self-stigma, can prevent individuals from receiving the mental health treatment they need. In this Assignment, you analyze the influence of stigma on experiences with and treatment of mental illness.
To prepare: Watch the TED Talk by Sangu Delle and then review the readings for this week. Focus on Delle’s examples illustrating Corrigan’s model about the stages of stigma and the hierarchy of disclosure. Consider Delle’s experience against that model.
Submit a 2- 3-page paper that addresses the following topics, content, and headings:
· Briefly explain Corrigan’s model of the stages of stigma and his recommendations and hierarchy about recovery.
· Explain whether Delle’s experience follows that model. Use specific examples to argue your perspective. If you agree, identify which stage of recovery Delle is in.
· Analyze Delle’s reports about his own experiences with both types of stigma. Provide specific examples, and in your analysis consider the following questions:

• Does one type of stigma predominate in his talk?
• Which of Delle’s personal values or beliefs were challenged by his internalizations about his own illness and help-seeking?
• What strengths does he exhibit?
• What was the primary benefit of his diagnosis?
• Do you think his experience would be different if his culture was different? Explain why or why not?
