English assignment 4

Choose one of the prompts below and develop a one-page (250-350 word) response in which you demonstrate how you have dealt with one of these universal themes in your personal life. This is an informal writing assignment, so feel free to get creative and have fun with this assignment, or to get personal and expressive. You are welcome to use first person (I and we) and to write this in any form you choose — poem, short short, letter to the editor, journal entry, blog post, newspaper article, or even a series of Facebook status or Twitter updates — as long as your writing meets the minimum word count.

PROMPT #!: Have you ever lost something that was really important to you? How did you feel about it? Did other people understand what you were going through, or did you constantly have to explain yourself? Have you ever moved? Did you miss your old home? Write a lament for something that you have lost. It could be something serious, like the death of a loved one or a move that was hard to adjust to, or it could be something not-as- serious, like the loss of a favorite childhood toy.

PROMPT #2: You are trying to open up a restaurant / coffee shop that will become a social gathering place for your friends and peers. You want this place to be really cool — but also a place where people can relax and get comfortable. What kind of establishment will you open? How will you get people in the doors? What will they do once they get there? How will you keep them there for long periods of time and keep them coming back? Write a description or story of your ideal social meeting place.

PROMPT #3: Imagine that you are going on a college study trip, or pilgrimage, with a group of four strangers. Where would you go and why would you be going there? How would you want your life to change? Who would the strangers be and how would they talk, act, and dress? A nerd? A prep? A jock? The pretty girl? Write your own social satire of the members of your group.

Assignment: Final Paper

  • Review the information on the international company you selected during Week Five. The final paper will present an issue that a manager of your chosen company may face. You can select from the following list of issues or create your own scenario, approved by the instructor:
    • You discover that one of your management team has been accused of embezzling money from the company.
    • An investigative reporter has uncovered a potential child labor issue in one of your overseas production facilities.
    • There is political unrest in one of the countries in which you do business.
    • One of your products has been recalled due to safety or health concerns.
    • Sales of one specific product are down in one country. You suspect there may be a cultural issue affecting local sales.
    • There has been a natural disaster in one of the countries in which you do business.
    • There has been a 20% devaluation of the currency in one of the countries where you sell your products.
    • There has been a 20% devaluation of the currency in one of the countries from which you purchase materials.
    • The government in one of the countries in which you operate is insisting that you conduct some research and development work in that country for future products, and you are concerned about the security of your company’s intellectual property.
  • Write a paper of approximately 1,200 words that analyzes the company, focusing on the following points:
    • Begin with the company profile you created in Week Five.
    • Describe the company’s business model.
    • Describe its organizational structure.
    • Discuss its international business pattern.
  • As part of your paper, analyze the issue you chose using this company as a context and address the following elements:
    • Describe the issue as it relates to that company. Use specifics to provide the issue with a context.
    • Discuss the factors involved when addressing the issue.
    • Present a plan to address the issue.
  • Format your paper using the guidelines in the West Writing Style Handbook.
  • Include a minimum of three sources, which may consist of readings from the University Library, your text, and other selections.

Chapter 9 of the great gatsby

1. Think of Nick’s actions in Chapter 9 after “the holocaust was complete.”  What does Nick consistently try to do for Gatsby in the final chapter, and how successful is he?  As a reader, what do you think about the words and actions of characters such as Wolfsheim, Daisy, and even the just briefly mentioned Slagle?  Is Gatsby owed more than what these characters give him?  Is Nick noble for trying to do what he does, or do you think he’s wasting his time on an unworthy cause?  Explain briefly, using quotes from the chapter to illustrate/prove your points when possible.

2. Chapter 9 also indirectly reveals why George Wilson went to Gatsby’s house in Chapter 8.  Why did Wilson go there and do what he did?  What is Tom’s reaction/opinion/attitude about this?  What does that make you think about Tom as a person?

3. Take a look at the final three paragraphs of the novel, which are often quoted.  The language in them is a little dense (I warned you that Fitz can be a bit winding with his wording from the start!), but try to interpret the meaning and emotion of those paragraphs.  What is Nick saying as his final statement about Gatsby, as well as the pursuit/belief in dreams, goals, and aspirations?

4. Let me ask you to explain to me what the most positive or interesting part of the book of The Great Gatsbywas for you.  Again, I totally realize that for many of you being forced to read a novel written 90 years ago may not exactly have been the most pleasant thing ever, and many of you don’t have the full cultural background of the book, but try to find a silver lining somewhere…whether it is about the book itself and some angle you became engaged with in some way, or about my just MAGICAL presentation of the book, what was the most positive part of your experience going through this novel?

5. Finally, what was the biggest challenge or most painful angle of dealing with Gatsby?  Fitzgerald’s writing style?  The fairly simple plot stretched over 190 pages?  Boring story?  Unrealistic story?  Your background doesn’t really give you much cultural reference or experience with it?  Whatever was your biggest issue with getting through the book, explain it to me a bit!

This semester was tremendously productive than I accepted, which was a great course. I have learned a myriad of efficient skills in reading and writing that I needed to be successfully acclimated in the university life. In this coerce, I have learned many appropriate and successful ways that I can effectively and persuadably express my opinions, thoughts, and ideas on my essays. In addition, I have learned how can I make people to distinguish between what I say and what others say. I have studied at this class a great book that called They Say I Say.                            In this book, I have absorbed that there are multiple methods that I can successfully agree and disagree simultaneously. Also, how I should show other’s perspectives on appropriate methods. Moreover, I have learned how I agree with other’s opinion and disagree on wise ways. My overall feeling for this book is that I am completely taught and educated by this class. Also, I have been positively affected by this book. I can agree that They Say I Say book could improve me a lot in reading, writing, and even could enhance my listening comprehensive and speaking.

When I started writing my essays I started writing my outline. However, I started before that writing all the ideas that on my mind about the chosen topic on a piece of paper. After that I ask my friends about this topic to know their ideas and might new ideas come to my mind. After that I start writing my outline. I have learned on this class how could I successfully and effectively use the library. I have learned how to pick the appropriate sources. I have noticed that there are criteria to choose the appropriate sources.

First, the authors should have cardinality. We can measure cardinality through his degrees and experiences. Also, if that was about their major that is going to make them experts on that source. Second, if this source has been peer reviewed or not. This means this source (article) has been reviewed by other professional experts on this field. Third, I can know if it is going to help me out on my paper or not through reading the summary of it or reading the abstract. Throughout these wise methods, I can know how to choose an appropriate source and make my paper interesting and fully supported by strong evidences.

After that I started writing my paper starting with introduction. I have learned that introduction should start with a hook that can attract the readers. Also, writing some background for my topic on the introduction part to make readers know some information about my topic. Thereafter, I wrote my thesis statement which is the most important part on the essay. I have learned that thesis statement is the most significant aspect that can make my paper stronger. Then I write my 3 body paragraphs and they should be matched with my thesis statement respectively. Finally, sum up with my conclusion, which should restate my ideas that I wrote on the thesis statement. In addition, my conclusion should have some future suggestion. Moreover, I have learned that I should avoid using the second and third person.

I struggled on the argumentative essay because I was thinking how can I include the counterargument.  Another problem was finding the appropriate sources. This problem was my hardest problem that I faced. However, I have been taught by my instructor how I solve these issues. On my perspective, I believe that this course is made me a good writer and enhanced my skills on writing and reading. Also, I enjoyed the instructor teaching method.
