beliefs reading response

Principles to Actions includes a set of beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning that each fall on a continuum from unproductive to productive beliefs.  Choose a belief from “Beliefs about Teaching and Learning” that seems particularly appropriate for your own situation.

Write a reflection about this belief that includes where your school is regarding this belief, what factors might contribute to that belief, and a goal you have regarding that belief.

problem we live with response

In your reaction, you can talk about whatever you want, but I encourage you to make it personal (e.g., don’t try to figure out how you are “supposed to” respond, just respond honestly).   I’m the only one who will see or listen to your response. In terms of grading, all I’m looking for in your reaction is evidence that you listened to the story.  I am not grading you on your opinion, so do not feel like you have to “agree” with what you think, I think.

Also, I don’t think it is necessary that you sit at a computer to listen to the podcast.  You are welcome to download it onto a mobile device and listen while you are making dinner, working out, etc. (but not while you are grading or doing something else that requires direct mental focus!)

school money discussion

After listening to School Money, and reading The Broken Promises of Choice in New York City Schools, post a comment in the discussion board with your reaction to these articles.  You can post anything that you are thinking, but here are some possible prompts:

  • What surprised you about the data that was shared?
  • What solutions for improving equitable access to quality education seem promising to you?
  • What are good ways that school districts, including your own, might utilize their money most effectively?

Remember to be respectful and make room for others to disagree, but also don’t be afraid to take a position (and back it up).
