One-Pager Reflection

This is a management course and the first skill you must learn is managing yourself.  Good managers take time to reflect on what they have done and compare it with what they set out to do.  This comparison is used to build on what was done well and improve on what was not.  Please write a one-pager reflecting on your semester to identify what worked and what did not. Hopefully, this will help you in your future courses and give you a tool you can use again and again to evaluate your life.  Please answer the following questions in your reflection.  You will submit your reflection as a file upload.  This is due Tuesday, Nov. 22nd by midnight.  Please make sure to edit your work before you submit for grammar and spelling.

1.  Reflect on how you viewed managers and the management position coming into this class versus how you see it now.  Has your view changed?  How?

2.  Throughout the semester, you completed a weekly scorecard in which you reflected on your previous week and measured your outcomes against your goals.  You also took a look ahead at the coming week and evaluated how you could improve on your performance.  Was this a helpful tool for you to manage your semester?  Why or why not?

3.  What value did you gain in terms of understanding the discipline of management?  What skills or concepts were beneficial?

4.  How will you apply what you have learned this semester to future courses in order to manage yourself?  To your future or present career?

testing issues discussion

Please respond to one or more of these questions, or share any other reactions you had to the topics raised in the articles. Critical perspectives are welcome as long as rationales or evidence are provided.

  1. Under the intense standardized testing era that has been prominent in the U.S. since 2002, who do you think has benefited and who has been harmed? With this question, we are mostly interested in schools and students (rather than companies or private organizations) so you may choose to think about it as which students (or teachers) were served well by the emphasis on standardized testing and which students have not been served well? See the first two articles in particular.
  2. In what ways does ESSA alleviate some of the problems from the standardized testing era? What issues do you think will still remain? See the third article in particular.

technology discussion 8875

  1. With regard to the other SMPs (not SMP 5), does technology need to be used to support the mathematical practices? In other words, are some of the mathematical practices more like mental processes that have to be in the mind, separate from technological tools? Are some technologies better suited for supporting skill development or review rather than mathematical practices?

please respond to the above prompt

discussion 99

The phenomenal growth of the big techs – Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google – is raising concerns that these companies were allowed to grow too big … legally, despite the nation’s Antitrust Laws. The lack of enforcement of antitrust laws is the result of a shift in priorities away from small businesses and competition and in favor of consumer welfare and low prices. This shift in priorities has come at a price: the number of firms listed on the US stock exchange is now half of what it was in 1996, and the evidence of squashed startups and stifled innovation continues to mount.

In response, a bipartisan committee of congressional house members, along with legal scholars and political activists, are exploring ways to overhaul our  antitrust laws in order to rein in the power that the big techs now wield over our economy and our political system. While the specifics of this new legislation are still being hammered out, some suggested remedies to discourage firms from engaging in anticompetitive behavior are gaining wide support. Some of these suggested remedies are summarized in the attached document

https://sgsc.view.usg.edu/content/enforced/2319388-CO.880.ECON2106.81432.20222/Suggested%20%20Remedies%20for%20Antitrust%20Violations.docx?_&d2lSessionVal=8kb1hjM0X5AEJw4M8x7UHQNgI

  • The goal of US antitrust laws shifted from promoting small businesses and competition to promoting consumer welfare and low prices.  Do you agree with this interpretation of our antitrust laws  – that consumer welfare and low prices are more important than the survival of small businesses and competition? Explain.
  • Is the growth of the big techs a serious enough threat to our economy to justify overhauling our antitrust Laws? Explain.
  • After reading the suggested remedies in the enclosed document, which remedies do you think would be most effective in discouraging the big techs from engaging in anticompetitive behavior? Explain.
