One of the most important things you can learn about is determining the function of behavior. Knowing why a student is engaging in a certain behavior will help you identify an appropriate intervention. For example, a student’s tantrum could occur because he wants attention from the teacher or it could occur because it’s an escape from completing a math task. These different situations would require different interventions to decrease the chances of the tantrum happening again. That’s why it is so important to answer this question: Why is the behavior happening?
