Case Study Media 5

Directions: You will view several episodes of a crime-related television program, logging information about your observations and using that data to develop a written case study of the program. The purpose is to discover the narratives and frames the producers advance through the programming and determine if these choices have an impact on the social construction of the issues raised. For example, does the program Live PD promote a positive image of law enforcement, and how is that emphasized? You will use the Content Analysis Worksheet (Excel version)Preview the document to record your observations and the Content Analysis Guide as a resource to develop the case study. A Word document version of the Content Analysis Worksheet (Word version)Preview the document is also available as an alternative to the Excel version.

For your second post, I want everyone to think about the ethical implications of company behavior in relation to company legal obligations and consumer responses to actual and perceived failures of those obligations.  Further, what about consumer responsibilities? Enter the increasingly dramatic story of the super successful “every person” trading app- Robinhood!

Perhaps some of you currently use Robinhood or have heard about it because it has revolutionized access to financial markets/trading and the Gamestop/Blackberry/AMC stock short drama that has played out over the past several weeks.  However, with ease of access comes moral hazard problems…has Robinhood done a good job addressing this balance?  Have other similar trading apps?  What about consumer outcries and apps that provide easy (perhaps too easy?) legal redress, such as the Robot Lawyer “DO NOT PAY”? Review the links below and discuss this tenuous relationship between the law and ethics of profit-seeking in our App-driven world.

Potential Evaluation Subjects

In your initial post, briefly describe three policies or programs you are considering as the subject of the Final Paper, and explain the impact of any relevant political and ethical issues associated with the program evaluation. List the reasons you are considering each program. Explain political ramifications, both intended and inadvertent, of the programs or policies you have selected as possible topics for the Final Paper. In addition, examine any potential ethical issues or dilemmas that could be a byproduct of the evaluation you are proposing for the program or policy. In your analysis, take into account such issues as the scope of the programs under consideration, practical and logistical issues affecting the proposed evaluation, and any theoretical orientation you will use in your Final Paper.

The focus of the Final Paper will be on the creation of an evaluation proposal suitable for presentation in a criminal justice setting or agency. The proposal will center on needs assessment, impact monitoring, and the application of quantitative and/or qualitative techniques in the assessment of the selected program or policy. Rossi, Lipsey, and Freeman (2004) discuss the social context of evaluation. Your evaluation proposal should assess the effectiveness of a program or policy, addressing a specific problem proposed or developed as a solution to a contemporary issue in your chosen area of specialization within the Masters in Criminal Justice program: Law Enforcement and Corrections Administration, Cybercrime and Technology, Forensic Science, or Homeland Security. Utilize research skills to locate a minimum of 15 appropriate scholarly sources to support your statements within the required sections below. Small sections of the evaluation proposal will be completed throughout the progression of the course. Students can use those sections verbatim within the text of the Final Paper if they so choose. The evaluation proposal will be assessed based on the inclusion of the following elements:

Discussion: Reflections On Qualitative Research For Social Change

Be the change you wish to see in the world.
—Mahatma Gandhi, (1869–1948)
Indian Leader/Anti-War Activist

Education without action is like a billboard in a basement—big, bold, but actionable to no one. By incorporating social change as part of its mission statement, the leadership of Walden University is asking students, faculty, and leadership to consider the possibility of how to use one’s education to deliberately be in the world and make some part of it a better place.

Consider what you have learned from this course—the fundamental procedures of how to conduct qualitative research; and the critical processes that identify the researcher as a self-reflective co-participant. For this week, reflect on how these considerations have influenced your understanding of research and your direction for your dissertation or doctoral study.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the readings from the Ravitch and Carl and Rubin and Rubin and consider reflecting on your experiences in qualitative research throughout this course.
  • Review the media programs related to The Qualitative Dissertation Experience: A Doctoral Candidate Experience and consider the experience of other doctoral candidates through this qualitative research process.

ASSIGNMENT

Post your responses to the following:

  • Explain what social change means to you as a Walden doctoral candidate. What experiences from the course most influenced your understanding?
  • Explain what in qualitative research you would like to know more about as a result of taking this course.
  • Reflect on your problem statement and the next steps for developing a research topic for your dissertation or doctoral study. Include an explanation of whether you would choose a qualitative approach, why or why not.

Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.

Paula Plaintiff has any legal claims arising from a series of unfortunate events.

Description

Introduction
In this assignment, you’ll need to decide whether Paula Plaintiff has any legal claims arising from a series of unfortunate events. After reading the scenario, answer the questions that follow, making sure to fully explain the basis of your decision.

Paula Plaintiff is shopping at her favorite store, Cash Mart. She is looking for a new laptop, but she can’t find one she likes. Then, realizing that she is going to be late for an appointment, she attempts to leave the store, walking very fast. However, before she can leave, she is stopped by a security guard who accuses her of shoplifting. Paula, who has taken nothing, denies any wrong doing. The officer insists and takes Paula to a small room in the back of the store. The guard tells Paula that if she attempts to leave the room she will be arrested and sent to jail. At this point, the guard leaves the room. Paula is scared and waits in the room for over an hour until the manager comes in and apologizes and tells Paula that she is free to go.

About this same time, Geoffrey Golfer is hitting golf balls in his backyard. Geoffrey decides to break out his new driver and hits a golf ball out of his backyard into the Cash Mart parking lot. The golf ball hits Paula Plaintiff on the head and knocks her unconscious just as she is leaving the store.

Instructions
In a 6–10 paragraph paper, answer the following questions:

What types of legal claims could Paula make against Cash Mart and Geoffrey? Consider the following:
What are the possible tort claims that Paula can make against Cash Mart? Discuss the elements of the claim and how those elements relate to the facts in the scenario.
Was Geoffrey negligent when he hit the golf ball that injured Paula? Discuss the elements of negligence and use facts from the scenario to support your decision.
If Paula files a negligence claim against Geoffrey will she file in civil court or criminal court? Explain the difference between civil court and criminal court.
